Happy 2014! We hope the New Year is treating you well and would love to hear how your “stand more” resolution is going so far.
Are you hitting your goals, or hitting a wall? Don’t worry, getting used to your stand up desk can be challenging and we all have those “I’m sitting down and I don’t care if it’s bad for me!” days. That’s why we were glad to come across this blog by Justin Garrison, a systems administrator for Azusa Pacific University in California and a successful stand up desk user.
Justin has been a stand up desk aficionado for three years, so as an early adopter he has some very smart and simple advice for all the newbs. Here are his 3 tips: “Get a padded mat or soft shoe inserts, don’t force yourself to stand 100% of the time, always start your day standing.” Yes! We couldn’t agree more with all three.
We have reviewed some anti-fatigue mats on this blog before, and addressed the issue of how often to sit or stand during the day, but his third suggestion about always starting off your day standing is a great tip that I, for one, am going to try. According to Justin, “The best way I have found to start my day standing is to move my desk/chair into the standing position before I leave work at the end of the day. That way, in the morning I don’t have to move anything out of the way to stand and it would take me extra effort if I wanted to sit.” (For some more interesting reading, you might also want to check out Justin’s 2014 technology predictions.)
So, let us know how your New Year’s resolutions are working out so far. Whether it’s standing more, eating better, managing stress, or any other healthy living goal – we’re interested to know what kinds of triumphs and/or challenges you’re having.
