It’s simple – 10 people in a real estate office were asked to stand for at least three hours a day for one week while wearing an accelerometer to monitor their movement, a heart rate monitor, and a blood glucose monitor. Based on the readings, researchers found that standing burns about 50 more calories per hour than standing, or, as Dr. John Buckley put it, “Over the course of a year it would add up to about 30,000 extra calories, or around 8lb of fat …. the equivalent of running about 10 marathons a year.”
