Can a stand up desk rev up your metabolism? Certainly.
Can it lower your blood pressure? Signs point to ‘yes’.
But can it also boost your creativity, foster better workplace relationships, and make you a more effective leader? This advertising executive thinks so.
Award-winning ad exec Roman Paluta spoke to the Career News blog over at Payscale.com about how his standing desk has improved more than just his yearly physicals, saying “my mind is more clear, my body and brain operate more productively and efficiently.” According to the article, there are a few other areas where your stand-up desk may improve your career skills and even engender some “desk envy” in your fellow employees.
Better at-work relationships
C’mon, admit it, you’ve emailed the person in the cube next to you because you just didn’t feel like getting up and walking a few steps to ask them a quick question. I’m not proud of it either, but I’ve done it and I agree with Paluta that when I’m standing at my desk, I’m much more likely to walk over to a coworker and have a face-to-face interaction. “When you sit all day, it’s easier to hit the forward or reply buttons,” he said.
Better leadership skills
Which seems like a more dynamic and energized person to you – the one who sits alone at his or her desk all day or the one who is standing, moving, and interacting and collaborating with other people? Paluta pulls out the Steve Jobs card, noting that his leadership style was definitely the more movement-oriented type associated with those who use stand-up desks.
Better time management
Ever been in one of those meetings? Y’know, the kind where nothing much is accomplished despite the fact that you’ve been sitting there for several ice ages? Could it possibly have something to do with the fact that everyone is just hunkered down in their chairs, feeling sluggish and uninspired? According to Paluta, when meetings take place in his office at a standing table, they run more quickly and efficiently.
