With changing leaves, kids changing grades and some fiscal years coming to a close, the end of August is the perfect time to overhaul your office and make some organizational changes of your own!
If you need a little help with where to start organizing your office or workspace, don’t worry – we’ve listed our favorite tips and tricks to help you hit the ground running.
Power in Your Posture
The first thing you should always do when organizing an office is ensure your keyboard and monitor are in a position that maximizes good posture.
Your keyboard should be close enough to your body that your elbows aren’t overextended and your monitor should be eye-level.
Start a Filling System that Works
Papers and notes scattered around your desk aren’t helping your flow – they’re hampering it. Take some time to invest in a filing system or cabinets that will keep important papers organized and grouped appropriately.
If you aren’t exactly sure which system of organizing papers is for you, don’t worry! It may take a little trial and error to figure out exactly what works for you.
Getting organized is like a fingerprint – it’s different for everyone!
If you’re still feeling a little overwhelmed, remember, sometimes the best place for stray papers is in the recycling bin. You don’t need to keep every piece of paper that comes your way.
Emphasize White Space
A good rule of thumb when revamping a work station is to ensure you always leave an empty area on your desk the size of a standard piece of paper.
This way, you always have space for a handwritten note to capture that next great idea. Additionally, coworkers will always have a space to leave a paper for you and know exactly where to put it.
Remind Yourself to Limit Reminders
Between sticky notes, calendar alerts and pings from cellphones, reminders can get out of control. Aim to limit yourself to one system of alerts rather than multiple forms.
You won’t believe how clear-headed you’ll feel with a desk free of a collage of sticky notes!
One major misstep people take when organizing their office is neglecting the walls around their desk.
If your office has a few walls to work with, hang calendars, filing systems, clocks and more to save a little real estate on your desk.
Is your space overrun with too many wires? Use a piece of tape to bind wires so they take up less space. Not only are they aesthetically pleasing, bundled cords also help with office safety by reducing tripping hazards!
Also, try labeling wires with a piece of tape and writing what they’re connected to on the tape. That way, you’ll be set if you need to move a cord out of the bunch.
Consistency is Key
At the end of the day, one of the only ways to keep your office space organized is to consistently keep up the good work.
Try setting aside 15 minutes at the end of every week to clean or organize any stray papers, notebooks or office supplies.
